Welcome to 2020, evolutionary economists! This week’s post is more of a “this month in AFEE,” rounding up what’s happened over winter break.
Our AFEE membership meeting was held on January 3 during the annual ASSA conference in San Diego to present awards and listen to Dave Zalewski, president of AFEE, give his address: “Confronting the Trilemma: Culture, Institutions, and Macroeconomic Disequilibria.”
The annual ICAPE conference was held immediately after the conclusion of the ASSA, where members of our ICAPE member organizations presented research and we held our annual meeting. AFEE hosted our own session titled “Topics in Institutional Thought,” featuring papers on finance, inequality, and the role of debt in economic progress.
On Monday of this week, we in the United States honored the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and acknowledge the role of institutional barriers, such as police brutality and voter suppression, in hampering the political and economic advancement of Black Americans and Americans of color. This excellent article, published by the Economic Policy Institute, serves as a call to action for all of us to do our part in fighting injustice in hopes that our society can evolve past these horrors.
That’s all for now. Join us on Monday for our first AFEE member highlight!
