This Week in AFEE: Vol. 5

Life may be pretty much on hold right now, but we certainly can’t say that this is an economically boring time. As the not-ancient and not-Chinese curse goes, “May you live in interesting times.” I, personally, am tired of living through these history-defining events, but as the kids say, it be like that sometimes.

  • First and foremost, if you missed our massive AFEE write-up from March 23, go check it out! Some of the information is undoubtedly out of date by now, but if you’re interested in AFEE’s members’ takes on the situation, those can be found there.

  • This past Tuesday, Cornell University hosted a webinar on the economics of COVID-19, in which nine economists gave brief presentations on their ongoing research about the pandemic. The event is archived and you can view the (75-minute) video and slides here. Topics include the behavioral response to the virus, lessons from China, policy modeling, and the economic costs and benefits of social distancing.

  • The annual conference of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE) will be taking place online September 2-4. They are now accepting submissions for presentations, with preference given to research focusing on COVID-19 and pandemic economics more generally. More information can be found here, and abstracts can be submitted here until April 30.

  • Finally, the Frederic S. Lee Heterodox Economics Scholarship Fund is now accepting applicants for the fall 2020 semester. In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled in a doctoral heterodox economics program in the United States and demonstrate financial need. The fund will not provide scholarship aid for dissertation credit hours or for credit hours that are not directly relevant for the completion of the doctoral program’s course work. More information and the application can be found here. Applications are due May 15.

Finally, I hope you all are cutting yourselves some slack and taking care of yourselves. The world is a scary place right now and it’s okay to not be super productive. Take care of yourselves and stay healthy.
